The Essence and Power of the Prayer

Pushpam means flower blessing and this mantra, deep and profound calls on the 7 elements of the universe, the sun, moon. stars, earth. air, water and ethers. With the honoring of the elements you call on them to protect you, do you no harm.  Puspam means flower and Veda means the highest truth, so imagine honoring those elements with flowers of truth that steer your path and direct your way…you are invoking the blessings of pure truth from the elements.

When to Use

I have been called to preform this beautiful mantra at a house warming and at both the Shiva puja and Satyanaryena Pujas. I have chanted this as a solo in temples both in India and the USA. This is a challenging Mantra to learn, the sounds are foreign to the western ear. Listen to this or chant this if you have had a difficult life and look for the energy and vibration of truth to distil and clarify your life and to receive the protection of the elements.

Literal Translation

I have never seen or heard the literal translation of this mantra. It was not taught to women and may not be translated into English. I asked a Sanskrit scholar to translate and his interpretation is what I mentioned in the above section on the Essence and Power  of the prayer.

Story

I landed in India October of 89 exactly 25 years ago this week. It felt like home, and I was relieved to finally be on friendly ground. After a 12 hour sleep I had my driver pick me up and take me to the nicest Sari Shop in town. There I was shown beautiful silks one after another, until I had selected 5 stunning pieces. Two of these were Benares silk, a heavenly, queenly brocade. I was set to begin my life in India. I went first to the Siddha Yoga Ashram in Ganeshburi, the same as the Eat Pray Love adventure, perhaps I was a few years earlier then her. It was  a spectacular ashram with great beauty and incredible tradition. Chant went round the clock as the energy was electric and spiritual charged. Om Namah Shivah was chanted throughout the ashram every minute of the day, and I immersed myself in the morning chants, Guru Gita, Shiva Arati and other magnificent chants. After a time I had grown a custom to the routine it was time to join Guruji Keshavadas in A village on the outskirts of Bangalore.

It was there I was recognized for the first time. In a thick Indian accent Guruji said: “Where have you been? I have been looking all over the planet for you?” and our friendship began as if it the lifetimes that had past since we had been together were non existent. We began communicating mind to mind holding long conversations without our companions being any the wiser.

He gave me a name as is the tradition in India to initiate the devotee with a name. Quite to his surprise I didn’t want a new name but he insisted I have this as it was indeed my to have. ‘Veda you are Veda the highest truth!’

Within days of my arrival the priest were summoned to the living room of Guruji. There in the simple large mostly empty room the 12 brown skinned men chanted the Pushpam Mantra for me to hear. The Mantra was amazing and big! Not like the simple shorter mantras this had substance and was taken from scripture. One priest was given the responsibility of teaching me the mantra. Now this was  no small task as none of them knew any Enlish and I new no Sanskrit. Over 2 months I learned. The sounds came from the bottom of the throat and back of nose, the tongue needed to be on the roof of my mouth at times, on the back of my teeth. I learned to make sounds not used in American English and after my training I mastered the mantra perfectly.

I am happy to gift you this amazing gift ~ the Pushpam mantra for your pleasure and transformation!
