The Essence and Power of the Mantra
This is the Mantra for enlightenment prayed to Mother Gyatria who is said to have sprung from the Ganges River (Water Goddess).
When to Use the Mantra
Said on any 108 beaded mala daily is the traditional practice. Mantras of this nature are typically sad in the early morning from 4 am – 8 am and from 8pm – 12 pm not typically during the waking hours when needs of family and career come first.
To pray this prayer 1008 times will cause the devotee to move towards pure and rapid enlightenment the full practice is to purify the body and the mind, so it is traditional to shave the head upon starting the sadhana (108 day practice).
Fertile women caution;
Avoid this Mantra for the first 8 days of cycle the prayer is very heating, causing divine fires to burn inside the practitioner. (When cycling can make bleeding continue for weeks)
Literal Translation (modern)
“May we attain that excellent glory of Savitar the god:
So may he stimulate our prayers.”
—The Hymns of the Rigveda (1896).
Story
This was the second Mantra I learned with Guruji. I was gifted a teachers Mala of Rudraksha beads to pray this Mantra on.
I spent many days at the outside temple praying the Gyatri, it fortified my resolve on my spiritual quest. The Gyatri with each seed syllable having a profound meaning calls to the devotee as recited the experience of enlightenment.
