Last night, while speaking with my girlfriend, Barbara Niven, about an upcoming audition, I discovered a secret she had never before shared with me:
“Oh yes, I have been impregnated by aliens twice!” That got me laughing so very hard. Barbara, who is a seasoned actress and has been in more then 260 films, has on occasion taken a fun role in a science fiction film.
I really came to know Barbara when I enrolled in her media training. In addition, Barbara has helped girls and women overcome eating disorders; she is well-known and loved on stages across the country for her heartfelt conversations about being a star in Hollywood and the pressures of needing a tiny figure. Barbara suffered from Bulimia for 26 years. She thought it was a hidden secret until one day she discovered her daughter was now practicing her path and that was that.
Bulimic no more, Barbara is a radiant beauty. She now has a very special program to bring out a person’s radiance in her ‘Star Power Media Training Bootcamp.’ If you decide this might be a good fit for you, let me tell you what a pleasure it was to understand the camera and my relationship to it as well as the emotion needed to relay a safe and friendly, engaging conversation on film.
Three wins I got from Barbara Niven’s ‘Star Power Bootcamp’
1. Confidence on Camera. Although I have been an extra and featured in films, including rock star Prince’s movie ‘Purple Rain’. There is a vast difference from being a natural in a group scene in a film to being the star of a single message video piece.
2. Giggle and breathe. I have brought my goofy to the mix with all my videos since I studied with Barbara. And I can be extremely goofy. She encourages you to get a giggle going and start talking from the giggle. Don’t reset your face to serious. Breath and enjoy the time on film.
3. Look at the camera, even talk to the camera as if it were your best friend. After all, with video you are not talking to the masses. You are talking to one person sitting in front of their laptop hoping you will have the message they are looking for.
Barbara has a great sense of humor about her work as an actress; at the same time, she is irreverent and extremely modest about her fame.
