Change the world today!

There was a painful crisis in America fifteen years ago. Mothers, sister and our young were not being treated with honor and respect. Tolerance for violence and the systematic silencing of these individual voices was an accepted standard.

My heart was heavy laden, as I had left a marriage ending up in a woman’s shelter with my three small children. My former alcoholic partner raged on while I silently fled.

When the OJ Simpson trial came round  it made the head lines every day for months on end, I felt that I must act.

I took some time to think about what the most effective approach would be, then began to write.

First I wrote out my thoughts

1. Why was this important to me?
2. Who were the people involved?
3. Who was the final decision maker?
4. What would be heard?
5. How could I personally help improve this situation?
6. And finally steps to take..Actions to effect change.

If you have an anti war rally don’t invite me, but if you have a peace rally I will be there!

Why was this important to me?

That seems obvious, I did not want another woman, another friend, another child to be hurt abused or killed in my land. Some of my poetry from back then went like this

I sing for those who cannot sing
I cry for those without tears

I literally empathized so much with this group of women and children, it felt internal to me.

Who were the people involved?

They were women and children just like me. They were the survivors and the victims in what (should have been) a loving world.

Who was the final decision maker?

I learned to ask this question in my years of training with EST. Warner Erhart said not to waste time talking about an issue.  To be effective, go directly to the person with the power to change the situation. The only person I could think of to change this for our entire country was the President of the United States, who at the time was Bill Clinton.

What would be heard?

a.) I thought it was important to tell some of my story, to say how I had survived and escaped and the impact it was still playing out in my life.

b.) Rather than call to much attention to what was wrong I thought my voice would be more potent if I offered choices and positive suggestions.  Create a list of action items that would affect change.

How could I personally help improve this situation?

I realized my best opportunity was to act quickly, reveal some of my personal story, and to dedicate time to helping change this situation.

And finally steps to take..

Actions to effect change.

I wrote a 3 page letter to President Bill Clinton, 3 paragraphs of my story and 2 ½ pages of action items our nation could take to effect change. I asked him to respond to me personally and that I would do whatever I could to help. To be a voice and a force for change.

If you knew me then, I was a shy person, I hardly left my home. I had recovered from a (nervous breakdown) and was living a quiet life, painting, running a small massage practice, meditating and keeping life simple.

The actions I took, wanting only the best for our country and the desire to protect other women and children lead to a truly phenomenal change!

I received a personal letter from the president, on soft green presidential stationary. He thanked me for writing and praised me for the helpful ideas. He asked me to contact the congresswoman he had put in charge of the task force to end violence against women and children.

The rest is history.

Remember all the television commercials and bill boards, the school programs and the new programs to rehabilitate men charged with abuse or receiving restraining orders?

All my ideas were used!  I am sure there were many contributors to the changes, and I have the personal satisfaction of receiving a 3 page letter of appreciation from the congress woman and the committee.

The world was changed. One voice of helpful support was heard. It truly represents the law of attraction in action, if you want more bad to show up, continue to call attention to the bad and complain incessantly. However as Mother Teresa said if you have an anti war rally don’t invite me, but if you have a peace rally I will be there!
