If you have ever had the privilege of watching the 1972 movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon, you’ll remember this very special song:

 The Little Church

If you want your dream to be

Take your time, go slowly

Do few things but do them well

Heartfelt work grows purely

If you want to live life free

Take your time, go slowly

Do few things but do them well

Heartfelt work grows purely

Day by day, stone by stone

Build your secret slowly

Day by day, you’ll grow too

You’ll know heaven’s glory

The story is about the love both Saint Francis and Sister Clare have for lord Jesus and how they need to step out of ordinary life, dedicate themself to being present. During this song, the few who have become followers of the mission are rebuilding church ruins and restoring them to a usable worship center.

Saint Francis went through many phases of life, born the son of a wealthy had every privilege, was not drawn to follow Jesus till a series of occurrences both in vision and earthly cause a change of heart, and the wealthy man took on a life of poverty and devotion.

In his era, that was one of the most significant outer steps a person could do, give up his wealth to serve God and the needy.

I am not suggesting that it is necessary to give up your possessions and become an ascetic in this era. What meant so much to me and stayed with me years after I have seen the film was the way it was relayed. Saint Francis was entirely present. He was aware of everything, the nature of all the creatures. He was aware of the shape of each stone and found meaning in this pure path of love and charity.

As we are well into the process of unpacking, this can be a repetition chore or a joy.  This morning I completed my bedroom, bathroom, and closets and moved on to Adelia’s room which is now largely done. We listened to Doris Day songs and worked towards the goal of making this a comfy home and place of celebration and coming together with community events and gatherings.

In the fast-paced world, there is something to be said about staying fully present to the work at hand, having a goal in mind, perhaps a written goal, dedicating the world to the glory of God, and then embracing the actions in front of you needing your attention.
