Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Have you ever noticed that although everyone wants to be super cool, a large majority of people making a difference on the planet today march to the beat of their own drummer.   They would have been called misfits were it not for the contribution and impact they have made with their beneficent work.

We start our story with dear Rudolph and his dentist, elf friend, Hermes. Among the misfits who have brightened our path, Mother Teresa, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, and even Jesus, born to an ‘unwed mother,’ might have had to endure the challenges of a misfit, yet was perhaps the greatest light in the world.

Rudolph, darling little reindeer, was born with a glaring luminescent nose that seemed to blind everyone. He was encouraged to hide his light under a bushel.  Little did friends and family know that his light would be the blessing that saved children and ensured all the children of the world received their Christmas gifts on time. I wonder if you have ever been told to hide your light under a bushel?

Mother Teresa, a nun on a mission, was not encouraged to do her work in the world. She wasn’t pretty or particularly good at raising money, but got on a train and traveled to the poorest of the poor to help with the dying and the unwanted babies of the streets of Calcutta.  She was not a cool person but she was a loving person.  Her love shone like a beacon in a world filled with fear and pain.

Mata Amritanandamayi Devi is known as the hugging saint. In her youth, she was prone to episodes of psychoses.  While being overtaken in spiritual ecstasy, she would wander the streets and be found rolling on the ground unwashed and hungry. She was odd by anyone’s standards.  Her heart was so good and her love was so great that people in the villages would naturally care for her, clean her and offer blessed food. As she matured, these episodes shifted and she became one of the greatest female leaders to emerge from India.

Beginning with her work amongst the poor and misfortunate in India as well as her generosity and love among the spiritual and even the very wealthy in the U.S. and Europe is the most compelling example of a life well lived. Mata Amritanandamayi Devi is a blessing to millions of people.

Jesus’s story is the story of a mother who conceives a child before marriage then struggles to convince her family and future husband of her innocence. It is the beginning of the legacy that rocked our world. Jesus was not like the normal kids of his day. He was often found discussing scripture with the wise elders of the synagogue. You never hear a story about Jesus playing with other children. Thank goodness, he let his light shine in the world and impact the human race in the most blessed and positive ways. He showed us the path of prayer, enlightenment, health and vitality and how to be an excellent human.

Let your light shine in the world

If somehow you fell away from the path of loving others in pursuit of the cool clothes, car, house, career and you are not letting your light and love shine in the world I encourage you to make a new choice!
