Sitting in the Minneapolis airport enjoying a meal before my flight home, I hear the beloved holiday ‘Frosty the Snowman’ ballad.  I am in a happy mood returning after a delightful family Christmas with the ones I love.

As I listen to the ditty, I realize Frosty is the story of reincarnation. In a snapshot, Frosty’s short lifecycle, a life of service and celebration, returns again and again to fulfill his ‘soul’ purpose.

Since Frosty does not have a human body, his spirit, referred to in the song as his soul, travels in a hat.  And he is borne into the snowman body in the legend of ‘Frosty the Snowman.’

The culture of the East, Buddhist and Hindus alike, recognize the experience of the reincarnating soul. Even the Bible has a few references to reincarnation. The Nicene Council, a group of early church politicians, removed almost all reference of reincarnation from the Bible in 365 AD.  But they left a few in. Remember in the story of suffering, when King Herod asks, “who are you?” Jesus responds, “Who do you think I am?” Herod says, “some people say you are Elijah.” This is a reference to a previous incarnation.

So, here we have a happy singsong jingle of a snowman, who will return next Winter to incarnate and once again dance and play with the children through the streets of town to spread happiness and cheer along the way!

Frosty The Snowman

by Steve “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson
Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal.

Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say,
He was made of snow but the children
Know how he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic in that
Old silk hat they found.
For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around.
O, Frosty the snowman
Was alive as he could be,
And the children say he could laugh
And play just the same as you and me.

Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Look at Frosty go.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.

Frosty the snowman knew
The sun was hot that day,
So he said, “Let’s run and
We’ll have some fun
Now before I melt away.”

Down to the village,
With a broomstick in his hand,
Running here and there all
Around the square saying,
Catch me if you can.
He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop.
And he only paused a moment when
He heard him holler “Stop!”

For Frosty the snow man
Had to hurry on his way,
But he waved goodbye saying,
“Don’t you cry,
I’ll be back again some day.”

Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Look at Frosty go.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.

Frosty Reincarnates Every Winter

Perhaps unbeknownst to the author of the beloved children’s song, we have a wonderful illustration of the process of incarnation, death and the forward looking to reincarnation.

frostycartoonFrosty had the task of having fun and enjoying the children in this life as well as bring joy to them. His cycles were shorter then most humans, as he would appear as the magic hat placed on a snowman at the beginning of the winter and stayed until the spring thaw. During this holiday season, you might look at what you think your ‘soul/spirit’ purpose is?

Are you here to join in the celebration with children? Can you make a difference with senior citizens and brighten their day? Have you chosen a happy life, with lots of celebration? If not, wouldn’t now be a good time to choose?
