I had wanted to see a pelican. We’ve been to a birding sanctuary and seen many birds. And sure enough, last night when we went on our pirate adventure, there were pelicans sitting on the dock.
I found it delightful to look at these ancient birds and discover more about who they are.
The pelican in scripture is considered an unclean bird. In other words, it would be a bird that you could not eat or cook. So unlike a chicken or a turkey, this bird would not be considered a bird suitable for human consumption.
As I researched the pelican, I discovered that it has been around for 36 million years, at least the record they have fossil wise, and that it has really not changed at all in all of those years.
We have talked in class about the different eternities in Psalm 106. The very last words of the song: bless be the God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting, and all people say amen, amen. So these birds have come through more than one everlasting or more than what we’re calling an eternity.
There is also scripture describing the pelican as isolated in the wilderness alone.
I have wondered if that was a particularly interesting look at the moment I feel myself in just now with my family of origin. Yet I, of course, do not feel cursed. I feel that God has given me a big assignment, and I continue to be true to what God has asked of me.
